HRH Princess Anne opens the games in glorious sunshine
The Orkney games are on!
The 20th Island Games were officially opened by HRH Princess Anne in Orkney on Saturday 12 July.
Kirkwall was bathed in sunshine for the event at Bignold Park.
The athletes from all 24 islands gathered in the sunshine for music and performances before Lorraine Kelly and Stuart Bain took over hosting duties.
After speeches, Princess Anne encouraged the athletes to make the most of their time in Orkney and enjoy their events before declaring the Games open.
Guernsey had the honour of leading the parade through Kirkwall, as the host of the last Games.
Triathlete Amy Critchlow lead the way as flag bearer for the team.
On the way out of the park, teenage Badminton player Medha Vallapureddy had the honour of being the island's water carrier.
She poured water collected from Bordeaux and transported to Orkney by the Archery team, into a fountain created specially for the Games.
It's a symbolic ceremony at every games where water from all the islands is mixed together.
From there the team followed the Kirkwall City Pipe Band, who were amazing by the way, through the streets.
It felt like all of Orkney had turned out to welcome the athletes, as they lined the streets.
A fabulous welcome from the host island and now the competitors are ready to begin.
