Welcomed by glorious sunshine

Team Guernsey travel to Orkney

A long day of travel saw all of Team Guernsey make it to Orkney on Friday 11 July.

While some travelled independently, the majority of the team flew out of Guernsey airport first thing.

There were two charter flights to Wick, in Scotland, run by Aurigny and Blue Islands.

Two and a half hours later the team landed, one of four flights into the airport, which normally only has one a day.

Then it was on to the waiting coaches for transfer to the port.

But with a four hour wait for the boat, the coach company - Dunnetts, offered an unexpected visit to John O'Groats.

So, Team Guernsey got their first glimpse of Orkney from there and enjoyed a few hours out in the unexpected, and warm, sunshine.

A short drive later and we were at the tiny port of Gills Bay, for the 70 minute ferry to St Margaret's Hope, in South Ronaldsay.

There the team was met by Ola the Orca, the official Island Games mascot this year.

They received welcome bags and their accreditation before getting on buses to their accommodation.

The team is spread over 22 different locations for the week.
