New Team-Mate for Guernsey Island Games Squad
The Guernsey Island Games team has a new supporter with the arrival of a team mascot. The mascot is a female Guernsey donkey, wearing this year’s official team kit, and is sponsored by Generali Worldwide.
The primary aim of the mascot is to get children involved and excited about the Games, and she will be visiting schools and making appearances around the island in the build up to the games. She will also be at the official team send-off event and will be at the airport to wave the team off when they depart for Gotland on 23rd June.
As yet the donkey does not have a name and Generali Worldwide is asking children for their ideas. The naming competition can be entered by anyone under the age of 16 and entrants are being asked to post their suggestions on GIGA’s Facebook page, along with their name and age by midday on 19th June.
Brian Allen, Chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association, commented: “We welcome this wonderful new addition to our team, she is a brilliant way for young children to get involved in the Games and I am sure she will be very popular.”
Giorgio Daboni, CEO of Generali Worldwide, also emphasised the mascot’s purpose: “The children of the Island are our future sports stars and we believe that the mascot is a novel and fun way of introducing the Island Games to our younger generations.”
‘Engagement with sport gives kids fantastic physical and mental benefits, teaches them life-skills, team work, perseverance and resilience. My father inspired me to start playing volleyball and I hope my example can inspire my children to engage in sport throughout their lives, says Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, member of the Guernsey Volleyball Squad.
